The most useful yoga practices in this sunny season

The Earth, like us, breathes. Knowing its cycles enables you to find your rhythm in harmony with the earth’s one.
The earth breathes as we do. These are breathes that have a daily or annual cycle, which follow the alternating of the seasons. In its breathing, like in ours, rhythms of expansion and contraction, absorption and releasing of the vital forces are alternating.
The Russian scientist Vladislav Lugovenko has found a measurable connection between the earth’s breathing and its effects on the human being, thus confirming the concept of cosmic energy which is deeply rooted in ancient cultures of all populations.
Even though your life is separated from Earth by layers of concrete, metal sheets and pneumatics, these rhythms affect and involve you more than you are aware of.
In each season the practice of yoga can be proposed following these rythms, which we are part of, benefitting from them through a practice that is supported and alligned with that particular moment of the year.
During the current days, we are getting close to the maximum solar energy expansion. Beginning with the winter solstice, the energies which were held and regenerated through the inhalation of the Earth are slowly released and, day after day, the solar energy starts to expand and gain more and more force. After this, the Earth slowly starts inhaling, the days get shorter, but until the autumn equinox, the daylight prevails over the darkness, and we can benefit from the powerful energy wave released in its exhalation cycle.
The suggested practices in this season are connected to the solar energy, which is a male energy, of extroversion, expansion and action. This energy favours sharing and meeting.
The indicated poses for this cycle are: sun salutation, the warriors’ poses, and all the ‘fire’ poses. It is less indicated to do intense meditation practices at this time, which are best suited in autumn and winter, when the inhalation cycle favours introspection and recollection.
One of the characteristics of the ‘solar cycle’ is an energy connected to the solar plexus, also known as manipura chakra, physical and subtle centre of the fire element and the vital functions of digestion and assimilation.
By properly reactivating and balancing this centre enables us to experience:
- action and realization
- personal power
Some of the suggested exercises for this period of the year are also useful at any time of feeling particularly lazy or apathetic, despondent or powerless. Always bear in mind that when the body changes, the mind changes; if you apply enough constancy, you will obtain results and the dormant energies will awaken and be available to you.
It is difficult to suggest these practices in writing, since they are taught with direct contact; if you already know some yoga practices, you can easily apply them according to these considerations (or to this zen story): a student asked his teacher ‘How can I experience feeling at One with Creation?’ - ‘By listening to it’, said the teacher’- ‘How am I supposed to listen to it?’ – ‘Become an ear that listens to every single thing that the universe is saying’
